Indications

Custom cranioplasty for every skull defect

Patient-specific cranial implants are designed from each patient's CT to restore the skull's original contour. Because the implant matches the defect margins exactly, surgeons fix it in place without bending or trimming, which shortens surgery and improves the cosmetic result.

  • Decompressive craniectomyDelayed cranioplasty after DC for raised intracranial pressure.
  • Trauma & RTAReconstruction of comminuted and depressed skull fractures.
  • Tumour resectionSingle- or two-stage reconstruction after meningioma and bone tumour excision.
  • Infected or resorbed flapReplacement when the autologous bone flap cannot be used.
  • Frontal & fronto-temporal defectsAesthetic-zone reconstruction including the orbital rim.
  • Large and complex defectsBifrontal and hemicraniectomy defects planned in 3D.

Bioresorbable option: we also supply patient-specific bioresorbable cranial implants in PCL-TCP (polycaprolactone–tricalcium phosphate), such as the Osteopore® PSI. Designed from the CT, the porous scaffold mimics cancellous bone, supports tissue and vascular ingrowth, and resorbs fully over time. It is fixed with plates and screws and used together with a bone graft or graft substitute.

FAQ

Cranial implants: questions surgeons ask

What is a patient-specific cranial implant?

A patient-specific cranial implant is a custom skull plate designed from the patient's CT scan to fill a cranial defect exactly. It is 3D-printed in titanium or PEEK, or made in PMMA, and arrives ready to fix without intraoperative shaping.

When is a custom cranioplasty implant used?

Custom implants are used to reconstruct skull defects after decompressive craniectomy, trauma, tumour resection or infection, and when the patient's own bone flap cannot be replaced.

PEEK vs titanium cranioplasty: which should I choose?

PEEK is radiolucent, has bone-like stiffness and causes few imaging artefacts. Titanium mesh gives the highest strength in a thin, perforated form. The choice depends on defect size, scalp condition and follow-up imaging needs.

How quickly can a cranial PSI be delivered?

Typically within 7 days of receiving the CT, including design review with the surgeon. Timelines vary by manufacturer and material.

What CT scan is needed for cranioplasty planning?

A thin-slice head CT (1 mm or less) exported as DICOM, including the full defect and the opposite healthy side.
