What it is

A mesh designed for one patient's bone

A 3D printed osseointegration mesh is a thin titanium mesh made by metal 3D printing from the patient's own scan. Its porous lattice structure gives bone a surface to grow into, so the mesh integrates with the surrounding bone instead of simply sitting on it.

Because it is designed in advance to the exact contour of the defect, the mesh fits without cutting or bending in theatre. The surgeon reviews and approves the design before it is made.

Applications

Where it is used

  • Cranial reconstructionThin, perforated cranioplasty mesh for skull defects after trauma, craniectomy or tumour surgery.
  • Orbital floor & wallsMesh shaped to restore orbital volume and globe position after fractures or tumour surgery.
  • Alveolar ridge augmentationCustom mesh holds bone graft in the right shape to rebuild jaw bone before dental implants.
  • Maxilla & mandible defectsContour-matched mesh to support bone grafts in jaw reconstruction.
  • Zygoma & midfaceMesh for midface contour and symmetry, mirrored from the healthy side.
  • Revision casesReplacing failed or poorly fitting hand-bent mesh with a planned, exact fit.
Why patient-specific

Benefits over hand-bent mesh

  • Exact fit. Shaped to the defect from the scan, with no trimming or bending in theatre.
  • Shorter surgery. Less time adapting the mesh means less time under anaesthesia.
  • Predictable bone volume. In ridge augmentation, the planned shape guides how much bone forms and where.
  • Bone integration. The porous lattice supports bone ingrowth for stable long-term fixation.
  • Planned fixation. Screw positions can be planned to avoid nerves, roots and thin bone.

FAQ

3D printed titanium mesh: questions surgeons ask

What is a 3D printed osseointegration mesh?

It is a titanium mesh designed from the patient's CT or CBCT scan and 3D printed in medical-grade titanium. Its porous lattice structure lets bone grow into and around the mesh, which helps it integrate with the patient's bone.

Where is a patient-specific titanium mesh used?

In cranial and orbital reconstruction, and in jaw surgery to hold bone graft in place for alveolar ridge augmentation before dental implants. Each mesh is shaped to the patient's defect.

How is it different from a standard titanium mesh?

A standard mesh is cut and bent by hand in theatre. A 3D printed mesh is designed in advance to the exact contour of the defect, so it fits without shaping, which shortens surgery and gives a predictable result.

What scan is needed?

A thin-slice CT for cranial and orbital cases, or a CBCT or CT of the jaw for ridge augmentation, exported as DICOM. Upload it on our website or share a link.

How long does it take?

Typically about 7 days from receiving the scan, including design review and approval by the surgeon. Timelines vary by manufacturer and case.
